Plot
After being confronted by the Man in Yellow, Tabitha informs Boyd of the encounter. She emphasizes that this confrontation took place in daylight,  the Talismans did not prevent him from entering her house, and that he told her that he killed Jim. Jade bursts in, volunteering to be the person to descend into the Tunnels to take the risk upon himself, as they lack a better plan. Boyd agrees, informing him of the Man in Yellow’s return.

Out in the forest, the Man in Yellow transforms back into Sophia. Sophia returns to Town and finds Elgin and Clara lowering the flag in order to salvage the rope from the flagpole. They tell her that they have been told to gather all the rope and chain they can find, as they will soon be heading into the Tunnels to dig up the children’s bones. Sophia follows Clara to the shed to find more rope. As they walk, they introduce themselves, but Sophia asks if Clara knows who she really is. Clara is confused, until Sophia’s eyes turn black. She asks a terrified Clara if she recalls the bargain they had made, as she Sophia a task for her.

Before Kristi leaves to find Boyd, she and Mari find the epinephrine from the ambulance. Kristi instructs Mari to keep Fatima occupied at the Clinic, and to use the epinephrine if Fatima’s heart stops.

Sophia and Clara head to the Myers’ House, looking for Sarah. Finding it empty, Sophia picks up a knife and brings Clara to her room. Assuring Clara that she does not have to be scared, Sophia reminds her that they agreed that Clara would help the Man in Yellow in exchange for being allowed out of the Township. Clara asks if she wants her to stop the bones from being retrieved, but Sophia says that will not be necessary, as the expedition will not go well. They are on the right track, but the Township is built on ritual, therefore how they do something is equally important to how they do it. In order to hasten her “games,” Sophia cuts her palm, does the same to Clara under duress, and presses their wounds together.

Outside Colony House, Donna points out that their plan will leave whoever is in the Tunnels vulnerable to the Creatures. Jade believes that the bones will act as a deterrent against the Creatures, but Donna remains doubtful. She then asks how they will get home after they retrieve the bones, arguing that their plan remains unfinished. Boyd points out that they do not have time, given the Man in Yellow’s presence. Kristi interrupts, asking to go for a walk with Boyd. As they walk, she begins to explain Fatima’s vital signs.

Patty finds Henry marveling at a carousel horse, offering him cookies. He politely declines, and she explains that baking used to help, but does not as much anymore. She leaves the plate by him. As he bites into one, he is transported to a care home, where he finds himself sitting with Victor, who asks him he has thought about what Dr. Boyd said. Noticing his surprise, Victor says he is familiar with all of the names from his father’s “delusions” due to his mumbling. Victor asks again about severing the “anchor,” but Henry says he cannot, for Victor is the thing anchoring him to the Township. Victor tells Henry that version of himself is not real, but eliminating him will allow Henry to stay with the “real” Victor and their family. Henry asks how he will even do that, but Victor tells him that once accepts it is a dream, the dream will provide a way forward. Victor, concerned, finds his father by the carousel horse. He remarks that Henry does not look alright, but Henry asks to be alone and leaves.

At the Sheriff’s Station, Kristi asks Boyd what his plan is. When he comes up with nothing, she suggests talking to Ellis, but Boyd decides to focus on getting everyone out of the Township. He informs her that they need her to come with them to the Bottle Tree, in case anyone needs medical attention, while Mari can stay with Fatima.

Tabitha tells her children about her encounter with the Man in Yellow. After Tabitha confirms that Jim was killed because of what she and Jade found out, Julie asks who is next, as they are still looking for answers. Julie warns the Township lies to people, revealing that she saw the Man in Yellow eating corpses, as she believed she could travel through time, when she was actually just experiencing seizures. Julie grabs the Talisman, asking how the Talismans work, as her past lives should have told her. When Tabitha has no answer, Julie reiterates that the Township lies to them, and makes them hurt themselves and each other.

Outside the Clinic, Clara pours a drop of her blood into a thermos. Inside, she tells Marielle that she brought an old family remedy to help Fatima feel better, and urges her to drink it while it is fresh. Fatima thanks her and pours herself a cup, grimacing at the taste. Clara tells her to take care of herself and leaves, hiding her tears.

Victor ascends the hill to his mother and sister’s graves. He admits he does not know what to think as Miranda is now Tabitha, lamenting that it means that Eloise is alone now. He tells them that there is something wrong with Henry, but he does not know how to help, worrying that he will not survive before they escape. He is interrupted by the Boy in White, who says that the others are planning on uprooting the Bottle Tree, warning that the tree is important and ordering him to prevent it.

At the Church, Boyd angrily beseeches God to spare Fatima and Ellis from whatever is happening to them, and to not to punish the others for whatever He has against Boyd by allowing them to go home. Sara arrives, having been told by Kristi that he was looking for her. After swearing her to secrecy, Boyd informs her that Fatima’s heart rate and blood pressure indicate that she should be dead. He reminds Sara that she told him that the voices were laughing, as they believed Boyd could not save her. He asks her if they really saved Fatima, and Sara answers she does not know. She tells him that she wants to be part of the expedition into the Tunnels, and he agrees.

Ethan finds his mother on their porch, examining a Talisman. He asks her if it was really Jim that told him to find the Lake of Tears, but bad things ended up happening. She admits she does not know, and Ethan observes that the Township tries to make them afraid so they do not believe in the things that will help, urging her to believe in her memories. As she hugs him, she observes that they are surrounded by the Ghoulish Children, who point at her before disappearing.

At the Bar, Jade engineers a radio that will allow them to communicate via morse code. Victor arrives, asking if they intend to pull down the Bottle Tree. Victor tells them that the Boy in White warned them not to do so. Boyd asks why the Boy in White will not help them or appear in person. Victor promises to prevent them from cutting down the tree. Boyd follows him into the street, where he restrains Victor, aided by Kenny. The two cuff Victor, and Kenny escorts him to the Sheriff’s Station. Tabitha arrives, drawn by Victor’s screams. Boyd explains how Victor is trying to prevent them from uprooting the Bottle Tree per the Boy in White’s instructions, and Tabitha agrees that they do not know who the Boy is or what he wants. She then tells him that she and Jade need to be the only ones to enter the Tunnels. She points to the Talisman, which has two people inscribed upon it. Boyd fears what would happen to Julie and Ethan if something goes wrong, but Tabitha says they have only one chance, and the way they do this matters. Boyd reluctantly relents.

As the sun sets, Boyd rings the warning bell. He passes Sophia, who volunteers to help with the rope ladder at the Diner. As night falls, Acosta and Bakta lead the volunteers in building the rope ladder. Sophia plays with the buttons on a jukebox, which begins playing “Doctor My Eyes” by Jackson Browne. Soon, the Nurse, Milkman and Waitress Creatures walk up to the windows, and the Nurse asks what they are doing inside, unnerving Patty and the others. Bakta urges them to ignore the Creatures, and Acosta orders them to stay focused and close the blinds. While everyone is distracted, Sophia secretly saws into the rope with a knife.

Meanwhile, Fatima begins writhing in pain as the Clinic, noticing the veins in her abdomen are turning black again. At the Sheriff’s Station, Boyd and Kenny observe Victor sitting silently in his cell. Boyd informs Kenny that he needs him to stay behind. Should the worst occur, he will need Kenny to help Donna take the reins, comparing it to a continuity of government in the event of catastrophe. Kenny refuses at first, but Boyd pleads for him to heed his instructions, and Kenny agrees. Boyd retrieves the last of Khatri’s whiskey, sharing it with Kenny, and they toast to better days.

The next morning, Tabitha leaves Julie and Ethan at Colony House as she and Jade prepare to depart for the Tunnels. Ethan is worried about her safety, but Tabitha promises that they will be safe, and the bones will protect them. Tabitha hugs her children and leaves with Jade, who quips that she is lucky, as no one tried to talk him out of their mission.

At the Bottle Tree, Boyd, Ellis and Randall prepare to uproot the tree, while Sara monitors the radio and Acosta, Bakta and Patty prepare the rope ladder. After confirming that the radios are working, Jade and Tabitha enter the Tunnels.

Clara goes to the Diner, where she updates Sophia that now, only Tabitha and Jade are entering to the Tunnels. Furious, Sophia tells her that she should have told her sooner, as Clara begs to be allowed to go home. Elgin arrives, having found a picture with someone resembling Sophia in storage. Sophia, ordering Clara to lock the door, informs him that she is only able to take the form of people who have died in the Township, before grabbing him.

Tabitha and Jade reach the burial chamber, sealing themselves in with the tarp and a Talisman, while up above, Boyd and the rest prepare to uproot the Bottle Tree. However, the sound of digging alerts the Cowboy, Cheerleader and Waitress Creatures to their presence. Jade and Tabitha find the coffin and remove the stone slab covering it. As they stare at the Children’s bones, the Cowboy Creatures tells them that they should not be doing that.
