The biological explanation the theory proposes is that Fatima is Smiley's mother in a literal sense, and the link is not supernatural overlay but a consequence of that birth. Fatima insists something is inside her, that her cravings and anger are intensifying because whatever grows there is getting stronger. Kristi's clinical framing of psychosomatic pregnancy does not resolve the question; it simply confirms the medical establishment within the Township cannot account for it. What the theory approaches but refuses to fully state is this: Fatima does not want to stop Smiley. The scream that halts his attack on Kenny is not a conscious command issued from protective instinct toward Kenny.
