Thaddeus Is Becoming Something Far Worse
THE THEORY
Thaddeus is not ghoulifying but undergoing FEV-driven mutation, most likely toward a Centaur-type form, and his insistence on the ghoul framing is a psychological defense rather than genuine confusion. A secondary mouth growing from his shoulder and an arm that detaches during combat have no precedent in the show's depiction of ghoulification, and both symptoms map directly onto FEV composite mutation as established in Fallout lore. The show has not confirmed what he is becoming, but Thaddeus almost certainly suspects, and is choosing not to.
How This Theory Works
Thaddeus is not ghoulifying. The mutations he carries, a secondary mouth growing from his shoulder and an arm that separates from his body under mechanical stress, are not consistent with ghoulification as depicted anywhere else in the series. The show has presented this as a mystery, but the evidence has already resolved it in one direction. What remains unspoken is the psychological implication: Thaddeus does not want to know what he is becoming. His self-description as new to ghoul stuff is not ignorance. It is a protective fiction. A man who has watched ghoulification from the outside, who served in the Brotherhood of Steel long enough to know what radiation does to flesh, is not confused about whether a mouth growing from his shoulder is normal degeneration. He is choosing not to press the question because the answer ends his identity as a human, a soldier, and a person with a recoverable future.
The most structurally credible explanation ties back to the snake oil salesman's serum. In Fallout lore, Centaurs are the product of FEV exposure acting on multiple biological hosts simultaneously, producing composite forms with secondary mouths and limb distortions. A shoulder mouth paired with spontaneous limb detachment maps directly onto that template. Thaddeus never understood what the serum introduced into his system, but his willingness to accept the ghoul framing, a condition with cultural legibility and even a kind of community, suggests he is actively reaching for the least threatening available category. FEV mutation has no such community. It has no plateau. It terminates in something that cannot speak for itself.
The arm detaching under combat stress is the hardest piece of evidence to dismiss. Ghoul tissue degrades, but it does not separate cleanly under mechanical load. That detail indicates the cellular logic binding his body has already shifted into a different register entirely. If Thaddeus is carrying FEV-driven mutation rather than radiation-driven ghoulification, the process will not stabilize at a recognizable ghoul state. The group traveling with him is not transporting someone who is changing. They are transporting someone who has already changed into something that does not yet know what it is, and whose continued self-deception is the only thing keeping that threat from being named.
Is this theory convincing?
Key Evidence
Secondary Mouth on Shoulder
A gaping mouth grows from Thaddeus's shoulder or clavicle area, a mutation with no precedent in the show's depiction of standard ghoulification.
Arm Detaches During Deathclaw Fight
Thaddeus's arm falls completely off during combat outside the Lucky 38, forcing him out of the fight and demonstrating structural tissue failure beyond anything seen in normal ghoul degeneration.
Thaddeus Identifies as New Ghoul
Thaddeus explicitly says 'I'm actually kind of new to all this ghoul stuff. Still got my nose,' framing his own condition as early-stage and unresolved while the visible mutations already contradict that framing.
Divergence from Cooper's Ghoulification
Observers within the cluster note that Thaddeus's mutations are progressing far more severely than Cooper Howard's ghoulification did, suggesting a different biological process is at work.
Snake Oil Salesman as FEV Vector
The serum administered by the snake oil salesman is the proposed origin of FEV exposure, with the secondary mouth and limb loss consistent with Centaur-type FEV mutation rather than radiation-driven ghoulification.
No Ghoul Precedent for These Symptoms
Multiple observers independently conclude that a detaching arm and a secondary mouth growth are inconsistent with ghoulification as depicted elsewhere in the series, pointing toward a different species classification entirely.
