What this context clarifies is that Cobel's subsequent behavior inside Lumon is not the conduct of a loyalist who went rogue. It is the conduct of someone who has always understood that Lumon absorbs tools and erases origins, and who has spent her institutional career building parallel operations that the Board cannot fully inventory. The wellness sessions she ran were not authorized experiments. They were research conducted inside Lumon's own infrastructure, using Lumon's subjects, toward ends that served her understanding of what the chip could and could not do. She withholds findings until she can deliver problem and solution together. She tests the chip's limits on subjects Lumon believes she is managing. Cobel is not a villain who became a victim or a victim who became a villain. She is the mechanism by which Lumon's accumulated institutional knowledge of how to partition a person's consciousness became exportable, scalable, and permanent. The institution made certain she could never claim credit for that transformation. What it could not make certain was that she would stop accumulating leverage against the day that changes.
