Burt's outie did not need to suspect a connection with Irving's innie. He already knew. When Irving showed up at his door shouting his name during the Overtime Contingency, Burt had a man terminated for an unsanctioned erotic entanglement standing in front of the innie who was almost certainly the other half of it. The dinner invitation was not warmth. It was Burt moving to claim, in the outie world, a relationship his innie had already built inside Lumon.

The pull between the two outies is not residual chemistry operating below the level of understanding. It is Burt reading a situation with full comprehension and choosing to act on it anyway. He knows what the entanglement was. He knows who it was with. The dinner invitation carries weight precisely because Burt understands that Irving's innie loves his innie, and that knowledge survived everything Lumon did to separate them. What the theory presses toward but has not fully committed to is this: Burt's invitation was not an acknowledgment of the past. It was an attempt to reconstruct the relationship at the outie level so that Lumon could not touch it again. He was not being sentimental. He was solving a problem.

Irving's firing strips that solution away entirely. Milchick's framing is careful and cold, reducing the innie's existence to an administrative footnote. But what that framing obscures is that Burt had already positioned himself to receive Irving's innie into a life Lumon does not control. The tragedy is not only that the relationship is severed. It is that Burt's plan worked exactly as he designed it and arrived one step too late. Lumon did not just fire an employee. It closed the door Burt had already opened from the outside.
