EPISODE RECAP
Mark is promoted to department chief at Lumon Industries, a company that uses a surgical procedure called "severance" to separate employees' work and personal memories, and he conducts the orientation for a new employee named Helly R., explaining that she will have no memory of her outside life while at work and vice versa. After leaving work, Mark attends a dinner at his sister Devon's house where he learns about the severance procedure from her husband's friends, and later encounters Petey, his former coworker, who has somehow bypassed the severance implant and warns Mark that nothing at Lumon is as it seems, giving him an address and urging him to learn the truth. Mark returns home troubled by Petey's cryptic message about the nature of the company and what he has become as a person.
