As the time-traveling Julie screams after The Man in Yellow rips out Jim's throat, he tells her they have to stop meeting like this, adding that there is no way to change the story once it’s been told, but she quickly disappears. The Man in Yellow turns towards the dying Jim, telling Jim that he really liked him, complimenting him for always trying so hard. However, he is sad to see Jim go, as what happens next is his favorite.

Out on the road, a Pastor finds the way forward blocked by a Fallen Tree.

In the Root Cellar, Fatima explains that the Creatures were once people, who made a bargain to sacrifice their children for immortality. Ellis helps Fatima, who is in extreme pain, out of the cellar, while Kenny descends into the hatch to find Boyd. As he makes his way through the tunnel, he is startled when Boyd comes up behind him, covering his mouth and dousing the lantern. Boyd tries to explain that they have to be quiet, but they are both surprised by a bloodstained Smiley, who greets Kenny. The two rush out and shut the trapdoor behind them. Boyd explains to a shocked Kenny that Fatima gave birth to Smiley.

At Colony House, Donna brings Kristi upstairs, past a bloodstained Sara, who leaves to avoid returning crowds, making Kristi uneasy. In the bedroom, Acosta sits with the injured Elgin, drawing her gun when Donna and Kristi enter. Donna admonishes Acosta for drawing on them, while Kristi moves to help Elgin. Donna explains that Sara gouged out his eye, though she had reasons. Clara barges in with the news that Ellis and Fatima are returning, and Donna forces her out as she sees Elgin.

In the forest, the Man in Yellow begins digging near some ruins. He finds a buried suitcase and begins stripping.

After they return to the Sheriff’s Station, Boyd retrieves a hidden lockbox full of ammunition, explaining that the box contains every bullet they have, and he needs to make sure they have enough for everyone, adding that he needs a headcount. Kenny tells  him he needs to stop, but Boyd cuts him off, lamenting the fact that their one victory has been undone. He explains that he is counting bullets to make sure they have enough to mercy-kill everyone, rather than wait for them to be brutally killed by the Creatures, disturbing Kenny. Kenny replies that there are 47 people in the Township.

In Colony House, Kristi tends to Elgin, who remarks that she must think he is an awful person. Kristi admits she once would have thought so, but now believes that the Township does bad things to good people. While she and Kristi clean his wounds, Elgin says that the baby’s birth was supposed to allow them all to go home, and things may still work out. Kristi bluntly tells him that something lied to him, before stitching his wounds.

Tabitha wanders through the forest, arriving at the graveyard in Town. She is spotted by her children, who rush over. She asks about Jim, but they have not seen him. Julie notices something amiss, but before they can discuss, a car races through Town, crashing into the wall of the Sheriff’s Station. Tabitha, Boyd and Kenny rush to help the passengers. The driver, pastor Dune, is knocked unconscious, while his daughter is trapped in her seat, with metal shards inches from her neck. Boyd sends someone to get the ambulance, and Kenny to the shed to fetch tools.

At the shed, Kenny retrieves the tools and finds Jade, informing him of the crash, and the two rush over. Tabitha and Boyd successfully extract Sophia as Mari arrives with the ambulance. Mari examines Dune, before turning to Sophia, cleaning her wounds and asking about her father. Sophia explains that he started shaking as they approached Town, and she tried to steer but could not control the car due to her father’s thrashing.

Boyd and Kenny pry the driver’s door open with Randall and Jade’s help while Ethan and Victor watch, bringing him to the ambulance. Mari explains to Boyd that the pastor likely had a seizure, similar to Elgin. Their best case scenario is to bring him to the Clinic and hope he wakes up. They drive off, with Kenny joining them for the night.

Ethan asks Julie where the new arrivals will live, and Julie answers they will have to wait and see. Tabitha approaches, and they ask about their father as they walk home. Jade pulls Tabitha aside to discuss what they learned at the Bottle Tree. Still shaken, Tabitha is not sure if she believes that they are reincarnations people who lived centuries ago, pointing out that Sara tried to kill Ethan because of something similar. Jade insists that this is different, and they should discuss this with Jim. When Tabitha says that Jim has not yet returned, Jade grows worried, as it is almost dark.

Boyd approaches Colony House as Acosta is leaving. She excoriates him for torturing Elgin, calling him a monster. Inside, Boyd tells Donna that he will be spending the night, while she informs him that Kristi is tending to Elgin and Fatima, but they need to discuss what they will do about Elgin. Acosta enters the empty Diner, heading to the back to clean the blood off her clothes. The jukeboxes begin playing Frank Sinatra’s “Send in the Clowns” as she looks for new clothes.

Kristi finishes examining Fatima, declaring her physically alright. She asks about the birth, and Fatima angrily explains what happened, admonishing Kristi for not believing her. After Boyd and Donna arrive, Fatima asks what happened in the Tunnels. Boyd uneasily explains that he followed the Kimono Woman to a chamber full of Creatures, and saw Smiley Creature reborn, shocking all of them. Hearing a disturbance outside, Donna goes to investigate, and finds Victor dragging a mattress to his room for his father, while Henry apologizes for the noise.

Upon Donna's return, Fatima explains to everyone that during the brith she had a vision that the residents of the Town made a bargain with something to sacrifice their children in exchange for immortality, transforming them into the Creatures. However, she could not see the entity that made the promise. Boyd urges her to try and remember, but Fatima grows upset and tries to leave. She yells at all of them that there was something inside her but none of them listened. She does not understand what she saw or why, apologizing before leaving.

In the Clinic, Sophia prays by her father’s bedside. Kenny asks Mari what the pastor’s chances are, and Mari grimly notes that she’s more worried about his condition if he does wake up. Sophia asks if she could call her mother, but Kenny says that there is no cell reception. Sophia begins to panic as Kenny starts to explain the Township to her.  

At the Liu House, Tabitha and Julie anxiously await Jim’s return. The two begin arguing, but they are stopped by Ethan, who bluntly asks if Jim is dead. Tabitha says he is not, suggesting that he could be at Colony House or the RV, and promising that they will find him tomorrow. Ethan asks what will happen if they do not, and Julie reassures him, reminding him that Jim assured them Tabitha would return, which turned out to be true.

Kenny explains the Creatures and the Talismans to Sophia, admitting he does not know why they work. Sophia quotes John 1:5, "The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness shall not overcome it,” believing that the Talismans are a sign that God is with them. She asks Kenny to pray with her, and he reluctantly agrees as she prays for God to protect them and heal her father, after which she returns to his bedside.

While Fatima showers, Donna tells Boyd and Ellis that people will soon demand answers. Boyd explains that a pastor and her daughter arrived and crashed into the Sheriff’s Station. Boyd anguishes over the fact that Sophia is now doomed to a life in this monstrous place. He admits that the only thing that has gotten him out of bed in the morning is the chance that they could actually win, but the resurrection of Smiley has proven that the game is rigged agains them. As Boyd tries to leave, Kristi blocks him, scolding him for his self-pity while she stitches up eye sockets at his request. She warns that if he is seen losing faith, they will find more people hanging themselves in the bathroom. Ellis asks for a moment alone with his father. After Donna and Kristi leave, Ellis tells Boyd that Kristi is right, but Boyd, defeated, says he is falling apart as if he cannot get Ellis home, it means none of their sacrifices, including Abby, mattered. As he begins crying, Ellis pulls him into a hug.

At the Lius' Home, Tabitha and Julie wait for Jim while Ethan sleeps. They are startled by a metallic clang, prompting Tabitha and Julie to investigate. In the kitchen, they find a fallen pot, but a magazine then flies off the table into a wall. Ethan asks what is happening as the cabinet doors begin opening and closing by themselves.

In the Clinic, Sophia makes sure that Kenny is asleep before approaching her father. Putting her hand on his chest, she asks him to wake up. When he does, she tells him that he has a very important role to play in the story. A flashback reveals that Sophia is actually a disguise of the Man in Yellow in order to blend in among the people in Town. Dune picked her up, believing her to be a lost hitchhiker. “Sophia” then caused Dune to start seizing, and she steered the car into the Sheriff’s Station. She thanks him for his help, expressing her excitement at her next and favorite part: watching everyone tear themselves apart, though she is sorry he will not be able to see it. Grinning, Sophia smothers him to death.
