As Boyd and Kenny pore over maps, trying to track the search parties’ progress, Kenny asks why Fatima was at the Shack. Before he can answer, Ellis arrives and tells them that he believes Elgin knows where Fatima is.

In the Root Cellar, a heavily pregnant Fatima experiences painful contractions. As she opens her dress to look at her stomach, something inside begins moving, causing her great pain.

Ellis continues to explain how Elgin said that Fatima was fine, everything was important and how calmly he was approaching the situation.  Boyd tells Kenny and Ellis to go to Colony House and keep Elgin from leaving.

Outside, Jim and Ethan return to Town. As they return to the Lius’ Home, they are greeted by Victor, who says that Tabitha fell. Jim rushes inside and finds her in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Victor tells Ethan that he saw the Boy in White, but he wasn’t very helpful. Julie comes outside and takes Ethan to the Diner. Inside, Tabitha explains that the child led her to the Root Cellar, where she found Victor blaming himself for her death. However, she then experienced Miranda’s memories, and it felt like Miranda was trying to tell her something.

Jim goes to the Bar. He first apologizes for berating Jade the prior day, admitting that he was scared because there are things happening to his family that he does not know how to protect them from, but he thinks Jade might.

Boyd finds Sara in the Church. As they walk towards Colony House, Boyd explains that Elgin has been behaving strangely, and said that Fatima and the baby might be the reason they all go home, noting the similarity to what Sara experienced. Boyd tells Sara that she needs to make Elgin understand that whatever is communicating with him does not have good intentions. They are greeted by Donna, who asks what is going on. Boyd asks Donna to clear the house.

In the Lius’ Home, Tabitha finishes explaining how Miranda almost got to the Bottle Tree, but was attacked by a Creature. Jim notes that Jade has had visions previously, but Jade explains that he sees things that should not be there, like the Civil War Soldier. Jade asks Tabitha what Miranda was trying to tell her. As Tabitha admits she sounds crazy, Jade says she is not, and explains that according to thermodynamics, energy cannot be created or destroyed. He theorizes that the energy behaves in unique ways in the Township, and says that the Children appear to want her to see Miranda’s memories. He asks where she was when she saw the child, and she says near Victor’s truck.

As Elgin prepares to leave Colony House, he finds his way blocked by Boyd, Donna and Sara. Boyd asks if they can talk for a bit, and Elgin agrees. Donna leads him to her room. While Kenny stands watch outside, Boyd begins interrogating Elgin, noting the supplies in his bag. Boyd bluntly asks Elgin if he knows where Fatima is. Elgin explains that she told him not to say anything, but  he is not trying to hurt anyone, and  what is happening is a good thing. Donna asks who is communicating with him. Elgin answers that he believes it is an angel, and something is happening that is beyond their understanding, comparing it to the Bible, and the need to have faith even in the face of adversity. Boyd tells him that there is no baby, as Kristi and Mari performed an ultrasound and found nothing, and whatever is growing inside her is not good. Elgin replies that the angel explained it to him. Sara reminds Elgin that she previously told him that she killed her brother. She explains that she did this trying to kill Ethan at the behest of mysterious voices who told her it would allow them to go home. Sara tries to make him realize that the Township does not help them, but Elgin says that this is different. Ellis grows angry, and points out that Elgin does not know anything for a certainty. Donna reminds Elgin that even if the baby allows them to go home, its birth is months away, and Elgin reveals that the fetus has grown. Ellis attacks Elgin, but is restrained by Boyd and Kenny. They all go outside, trying to calm him. Sara warns them that if Elgin truly believes this will allow them to go home, he will not tell them anything, as she knows what it is like to be manipulated by the Township. Boyd decides to get Donna’s tools, and instructs them not to let anyone in the room.

At the playground, Henry approaches Victor and asks if he has succeeded in getting Jasper to speak. Victor answers that Henry was right, and it was just a doll. Henry apologizes for not being more helpful, explaining that his recent experiences have been a lot. Victor interrupts him and says that he must show his father something that will make him angry.

As Boyd gathers tools, Father Khatri asks Boyd if he plans on going through with torturing Elgin. Khatri points out that Boyd protected Fatima with no questions asked. Boyd defends his decision, pointing out that Tillie’s death was not her fault, but Khatri asks how that is different from Elgin. Khatri points out the similarities, and that in Elgin’s case, Boyd is preparing to torture him. Boyd counters that there was nothing he could do about Tillie’s death, but Khatri refuses to accept that argument, and says Boyd is not as noble as he acts, protecting what is his and screwing anyone who gets in his way. Boyd reminds him that they were supposed to figure this out together, but Khatri got himself killed. Khatri tells him that there is no coming back from this, and if he goes through with it the Township will have broken him. Khatri tells him that Boyd needs to decide who he is, as that is who he will be going forward. Khatri disappears, and Boyd leaves with the tools.

In the Root Cellar, Fatima cries out for help. In frustration, she throws a jar of blood at the wall. After it shatters, she picks up a large shard of glass.

Tabitha, Jim and Jade arrive at the Clairy’s Canned Goods Truck, and Jade explains that there may be a reason the Child appeared at the truck, and the Children are the one thread connecting all their experiences. He further explains how he saw them on altars underneath roots forming the Symbol. Tabitha says that Victor told her that the Children poured their hope into the roots which became the Bottle Tree. Jade shouts at the sky in frustration over the confusing messages. Jim asks if he feels better, and Jade admits he does not.

While Randall is working out, he becomes overwhelmed by the sound of cicadas, ripping the bandage off his face in frustration. Inside the Clinic, Marielle tells Kristi that she isn’t allowing her injury to heal and needs to rest. Kristi responds that she cannot just do nothing, and point out that Mari was very quiet after they brought Julie in. Randall barges in and asks where the equipment from the ambulance is. when they tell him that it was downstairs, he retrieves a defibrillator and tries to use it on himself, as the sound of cicadas grows louder. Mari finds him and stops him in time, assuring him that he will be alright.

Boyd returns to Colony House with the bag of tools. Ellis tries to stop him, but Boyd tells them not to let anyone upstairs, acknowledging that what happens next is on him. Kenny tries to dissuade him, telling him that they should talk to him again. Boyd answers that Fatima is running out of time, and asks Kenny to go downstairs, which he reluctantly does. Boyd enters the bedroom, and Elgin refuses to reveal where Fatima is. Resigned, Boyd says he is doing what he needs to do, just as Boyd is about to. As Boyd retrieves a hammer, the polaroid camera flashes and prints a picture. Elgin reveals that is how the Kimono Woman communicates with him, and she likely wants to talk with Boyd. Boyd examines the picture, which is of a house.

Victor leads Henry to Miranda and Eloise’s graves. As Henry is overcome by emotion, Victor tearfully reveals that it is his fault that they died, as he told Miranda about the Children. Victor says had he not said anything, they would still be alive. Victor adds that he should have died that night, and Henry should pretend that he did and stop being his father. Henry stops him, telling Victor that he will never stop being Victor’s father, and that Miranda did what she did because she loved Victor. Henry tells Victor that it is now his job to protect Victor, pulling him into a hug.

In the truck, Jade says that if the Children made the tree, then the numbers must also matter. Jim says that they do not even know who put them on the tree, and they could be some sort of delusion. Tabitha argues that Miranda knew they were important, as Miranda made a replica in her yard. Jim notes that the 2 and the 7 were backwards. As Jade rants about trying to solve the puzzle, Jim notes that there are 12 notes in a musical scale. Jade hails him as a genius, and tells Jim to find Miranda’s violin while he and Tabitha go to the Bar.

After sedating Randall, Marielle asks Kristi how they will help him. Kristi says she has tried to be respectful but now needs Marielle to tell her what happened when they were possessed by the Music Box Monster. Kristi says  she has no idea what they went through, but needs Mari to tell her if she is alright. Mari admits that she is not, and does not believe any of them will be.

In Colony House, Elgin asks what was in the  picture as Boyd ties him to the chair. Boyd says it was a picture of the house he and his wife bought when they were discharged from the military. Elgin tells him that the Kimono Woman is trying to show him that it means they are going home. As Boyd lays the tools out on the table, Elgin nervously reminds him that he would never hurt him, and everything he is doing is for them. Boyd  orders Elgin to tell him where Fatima is, or he will hurt him. Boyd asks Elgin where Fatima is as Father Khatri reappears to him. When Elgin does not answer, Boyd smashes Elgin’s hand with a hammer. Downstairs, Acosta returns, and overhears Elgin being tortured. She runs upstairs, followed by the others, and asks what is happening. As she demands to know what is happening, Boyd orders them all downstairs.

In the Bar, Jade and Tabitha try to figure out the order of the notes. Jim arrives with the violin as Jade places the notes in order. As he hums to himself, Jim asks what the tune is, and Jade explains that he heard the music as he looked at the notes. Jim warns that this may not be a good idea, reminding Jade that the Township might be manipulating him. Jade says it’s just music, but Jim points out that the Music Box nearly killed everyone. Tabitha agrees that they should not play the music in Town, and suggests playing the tune at the Bottle Tree.

In the Root Cellar, Fatima starts cutting her stomach with the glass, but the Kimono Woman orders her to stop, grabbing the shard and holding it to Fatima’s throat. The Kimono Woman tells Fatima that “he” is coming as her water breaks.

In the Diner, Ethan tells Julie that he does not want to forget Tian-Chen. Julie asks why he would think that, and Ethan confesses that he is beginning to forget what Thomas was like. Julie then reveals that she did not just have a dream at the ruins, but believes that she went somewhere, having been transported to the Dungeon where she saw herself, Randall and Mari chained to the wall. She then left the Dungeon for the Tunnels and heard Tabitha and Victor, but it felt like she was there. Ethan calls her a story walker, someone who can visit chapters of the story that already happened. Julie asks if she could do this again and use the ability to try and change things, like saving Thomas or Tian-Chen. Ethan informs her that she can visit the chapters, but not change them.

In Colony House, Boyd and Ellis argue with Acosta, who insists that there is a better way to find Fatima than torturing Elgin. Sara sneaks off and returns to Elgin, who says he cannot tell her. Sara understands, and reveals that she thought Elgin was kind and sweet, but her heart broke for him when he first arrived, as the Township looks for people like them. Elgin insists that he is doing the right thing, and begs to be let go. Sara tells Elgin that Boyd does not understand how far he has to go to get answers from Elgin. She continues to say that Boyd is a good man, and the Township has taken so much from, but she will not let it take his soul, as it has with her, approaching him with a screwdriver.

Downstairs, Boyd and Acosta continue arguing. Boyd says she can raise the issue again after they find Fatima. Acosta threatens to tell everyone what is happening, but they are interrupted by Elgin’s screams. They arrive to find Sara gouging out Elgin’s eye with the screwdriver. Sara then informs them that Fatima is in the Root Cellar.

At the Bottle Tree, Jade plays the violin. Meanwhile, Boyd, Ellis and Kenny run to the Root Cellar. Inside, the Kimono Woman assists Fatima as she gives birth to a fleshy, sac-like pod. The Kimono Woman takes it down the hatch. Boyd and the others enter and rush to Fatima, who tells them that the Kimono Woman took the “baby.” Boyd orders Kenny and Ellis to bring Fatima back to Colony House, explaining that they need to know what is coming. Boyd orders Ellis to take care of his wife, promising that he will be right behind them before descending down the hatch with a lantern.

At the tree, Tabitha sees the Ghoulish Children arriving, as does Jade, though Jim cannot see them. As Jade keeps playing, one Child approaches Tabitha. In the tunnel, Boyd finds a light. Meanwhile, Fatima reveals to Ellis that the Creatures sacrificed their children because they were promised immortality. The Kimono Woman brings the pod to a chamber filled with the Creatures and the Smiley Creature emerges from it as Boyd stares in disbelief.

After Jade finishes the song, the child approaches Tabitha and tells her “anghkooey.” Tabitha realizes that the word means “remember.” Tabitha runs off, and when Jim asks what happened, Jade only says they used to sing them lullabies. Jim runs after Tabitha and begs her to talk to him. Tabitha explains that the reason she and Jade can see them is because they are reincarnations of Miranda and Christopher. The two are reincarnations of the people who tried to save the children from being sacrificed, as one of the children was their daughter. Jim is shocked, and Tabitha asks for some time. After she walks away, Jim goes to the overturned RV and begins sobbing. However, he is interrupted by his daughter screaming for him. Julie, with much shorter hair and covered in blood, finds him and tells him to run. She says that this is where she needs to change the story.  However, they are found by the Man in the Yellow Suit, who remarks that Jade is a good violin player. Jim orders Julie to run as the Man draws closer, saying that this did not have to happen, but knowledge comes with a cost. Jim confront the man, who grabs him by the throat. Julie tries to help but is pushed away by the Man, who turns back to Jim and tells him that his wife should not have dug the hole, echoing the voice Jim heard on the radio. The Man then rips Jim’s throat out as Julie screams in horror.
